Major Beatmaker, UI + Sound Update!
Hello everyone!
I have updated the Lo-Fi Room demo here after a very long time! I was waiting to get other things set up beforehand, but that’s all been taking way too long, so I decided to upload an update now! Apologies for the long delay. This doesn’t add any extra levels, but it does contain a major overhaul of the beatmaker, menu UI, and the instrument sounds.
Here are the main changes!
Beatmaker Updates:
- Moved everything to one screen! This makes switching between instruments a lot more convenient.
- Edit mode! After recording a beat, if you’ve made a mistake, instead of deleting the whole take you can now remove, add or adjust individual notes with your mouse!
- Lo and hi pass filters -> New basic audio effects you can play with (not supported in the web version)
- Triplet Quantization -> you can now quantize instruments to a triplet rhythm
Here’s a video of me using the new system, to give you an idea of what’s possible:
Menu UI changes:
- Changes to try and better signpost remaining game modes/features that haven’t been tried yet. E.g. random beat mode, B-sides, beatmaker.
- Tried to remove unnecessary UI (e.g. the unused beatmaker takes).
Sound Update
- All the instrument sounds have been replaced, this was for volume balancing and other reasons. It was frustrating to do but I think it’ll be for the best in the long term.
- I’ve tried to keep things as close to the original sounds as possible (especially for the 3 tracks in the demo) but also improve some things with the what I've learned about mixing/processing over the past year or two. I might still make some more adjustments.
- I’ve updated the tools for making and importing the music into the game. It’s much more automated now which should make adjusting stuff and adding new music much easier in future.
Game UI changes
- Automatically leave after perfect
- Web fullscreen support
- Automatic hint system for finding instruments
- Improved tutorial
Language support
- I have added Korean and Japanese language support to the game! The Korean is probably ok (if a little awkward) but the Japanese is very rough. I did it quickly with auto translation for an event in Japan last year.
That's more or less it! Please try the new stuff out! Let me know what you think, and whether you run into any bugs/ other problems!
There is a discord you can join here for more regular monthly updates.
I’m working on getting a mailing list up and running again, I'm planning to send out download links to the 25 level playtest version there in a couple of months. You can still sign up here. I'll also use it for sending out monthly updates, but this will still take a bit more time to get started.
Also I keep adding stuff to my new website! I just added a page for my daily drawings, there are about 600 of them now. Check it out here: https://bearmask.io/dailydrawings
Thanks again for your patience and sticking with the development for so long~
